Carinthian Summer (July 7 – August 26, 2001)

Every year, medieval Ossiach, located at one of Carinthia’s warm lakes, and the lovely resort town of Villach, on the western end of Lake Wörth, join forces to present a summer filled to the brim with ambitious, high-quality programs. And every year, the Carinthian Summer Festival attracts a great number of international artists to Carinthia, Austria’s southernmost state, to perform in front of an appreciative audience from all over the world. In 2001, renowned flutist James Galway will perform at the opening concert, held at one of the loveliest venues of the Carinthian Summer, the Abbey Church in Ossiach. Rudolf Buchbinder will present a piano recital and Vladimir Fedoseyev will conduct the visiting Tchaikovsky Orchestra of Moscow. In addition to the Abbey Church and the Ossiach Abbey itself, there are also several historic venues in Villach.

Innsbruck: Festival of Early Music (July 10 – August 25, 2001)

Lovers of early music have come to regard the Innsbruck Festival of Early Music as one of the foremost musical occasions in Europe. In 2001, the festival once again puts on some rarities, such as the little-known Joseph Haydn opera, Il Mondo della Luna, and the early baroque opera Dal male il bene by Antonio Maria Abattini and Marco Marazzoli, both of which will be performed at the Tiroler Landestheater (Tyrolean State Theater).

The renowned Ambras Palace Concerts once again take place under the leadership of Rene Jacobs, one of the masters of early music: Without a doubt, one highlight of the festival, is a concert performance of Christoph Willibald Gluck’s opera Orfeo et Euridice, with the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra conducted by Jacobs.
