"AUSTRIAN MUSIC FESTIVALS" Page 1, 2, 3, 4, 5

Archived article from 2001

KlangBogen – Vienna’s Summer of Music (July 11 – August 24, 2001)

In 2001, the KlangBogen festival joins in celebrating the 200th anniversary of one of Vienna’s oldest theaters, the Theater an der Wien, built in 1801 by the librettist of Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte, Emanuel Schikaneder, and the location of the first performance of Beethoven's Fidelio . At the same time, KlangBogen pays homage to Giuseppe Verdi and the 100th anniversary of his death, by performing his opera Luisa Miller, with the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Bertrand de Billy. Also performed will be a lesser known opera by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky, Jolanthe, with the Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra Moscow conducted by Vladimir Fedoseyev. Throughout the summer, numerous concert performances will take place at unusual and historic locations.

For more detailed information and tickets, please contact Klangbogen Ticket Office, Stadiongasse 9, A-1010 Vienna, tel. 011-43-1-427 17, fax: 011-43-1-4000-99-8410 e-mail: tickets@klangbogen.at, website: www.klangbogen.at

Mörbisch: Lake Festival (July 12 – August 26, 2001)

“A stage in such a beautiful landscape offers the best conditions for a festival. You need beautiful voices, attractive performers and a good mixture of good operettas and viewing pleasure for the audience,” is how the organizer of the Operetta Festival Mörbisch, Harald Serafin, puts it. He is right: the stage on Lake Neusiedl is located in one of the most beautiful areas of Austria, and the performances at this, “the greatest operetta festival in the world," are of the highest possible quality.

In 2001, Mörbisch puts on yet another great Franz Lehár favorite: Das Land des Lächelns (The Land of Smiles) which takes place in the Far East and features love, drama and exotic surroundings – as well as some of the most immortal operetta melodies ever written.

For information and tickets, please contact Schloss Esterházy, A-7000 Eisenstadt tel. 011-43-2682-66210-0, fax: 011-43-2682-66210-14 e-mail: tickets@seefestspiele-moerbisch.at, website: www.seefestspiele-moerbisch.at

Bad Ischl: Operetta Festival (July 13 – September 2, 2001)

Bad Ischl used to be the summer vacation resort of Emperor Franz Joseph – it was here incidentally, that he became engaged to the love of his life, “Sissi", Empress Elisabeth. So it is not surprising that this entire romantic town seems like a backdrop for one of the immortal operettas by Johann Strauss or Franz Lehár - (who wrote many of his masterworks during his sojourns in Bad Ischl). This year however, Lehár is honored in a gala concert on August 14, 2001, which marks the fortieth anniversary of the Bad Ischl Operetta Festival. The rest of the festival is devoted to performances of Der Vogelhändler (The Bird Seller) by Carl Zeller and Madame Pompadour by Leo Fall.

For more detailed information and tickets, please contact Operettenfestspiele Bad Ischl, Kurhausstrasse 8, A-4820 Bad Ischl, tel. 011-43-6132-238 39, fax: 011-43-6132-23839 39 e-mail: info@operette.badischl.at.

International Haydn Days (September 6 – 16, 2001)

This year, the International Haydn Days commemorate the 200th anniversary of the first performance of Joseph Haydn’s famed oratorio “Die Jahreszeiten” (The Four Seasons). Also on the program are two Haydn operas: “La canterina” and “Lo speziale”.

Joseph Haydn and Eisenstadt have always been closely connected – so it is only fitting that the Haydn Festival takes place in the splendid rooms of Esterházy Palace: after all, music-loving Prince Esterházy was Haydn’s employer for many decades.

For more detailed information and tickets, please contact the Büro der Haydn Festspiele, Schloss Esterházy, A-7000 Eisenstadt, tel. 011-43-2682-61 806, fax: 011-43-2682-61 805 e-mail: office@haydnfestival.at, website: http://www.haydnfestival.at
