Biking in the Austrian Alps

Biking in the Austrian Alps: Cyclists with cows

ABOVE: If you're confronted by a cow on a cycling trail, speak to it quietly and don't show fear. Or, better yet, shift into high gear and pedal away.

Over the past several decades, Austria has made a massive investment in bicycle paths while providing services to the cyclists with the existing tourist infrastructure. Today, there are roughly 10,000 km (6,213 miles) of marked bicycle trails throughout the country, and the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) makes it easy to bicycle from place to place without backtracking--and, for that matter, without bringing your own bicycle.

Some 120 train stations across Austria rent bicycles at nominal rates, with a 50% discount if you present a rail ticket for the day that you're renting the bike. Not only that, but you can return the bicycle at any manned Austrian train station, and you can transport the rented bike or your own bicycle on Austrian trains for a low fee.
