"BIKING IN AUSTRIA" Page 1, 2, 3, 4

Bike hotels

In the Austrian Alps, many hotels and guesthouses do double duty as "bike hotels." These inns, which are mostly in the three- and four-star price categories, offer a variety of services for the biker:

Tours. Bike hotels offer some 800 tours in all, spanning more than 22,000 km (13,670 miles) on trails that range from well-maintained forest roads for leisure cyclists to challenging alpine crossings for the hardcore mountain-bike crowd.

Special meals. Menus that are geared to cyclists' nutritional needs are available at bike hotels, and guests can request packed lunches for eating on the trail as they pedal to the next town or village.

Transfers and bicycles. Most bike hotels will pick you up or drop you off at the nearest train station, hauling your luggage and, if you wish, your bicycle while you shop or explore the town. Even hotels not dedicated to bicyclists may be able to supply you with a bicycle during your stay.

For general information about cycling in Austria, visit the Radtouren Web site's English section at www.radtouren.at/english. The site is operated by the Austrian National Tourist Office.
