"BIKING IN AUSTRIA" Page 1, 2, 3, 4

Hohe Tauern Trail

Austria's most famous biking trail is the Tauernradweg, or Hohe Tauern Biking Path, in Salzburgerland. It starts at the base of the Hohe Tauern range, near the Krimml Waterfalls, at an elevation of 1,036 meters (3,400 feet). The trail ends 161 km (100 miles) and 610 vertical meters (2,000 feet) lower in the city of Salzburg.

Along the way, the Tauernradweg passes through dozens of towns and villages while avoiding traffic by meandering through alpine meadows and woodlands and along the banks of the Salzach River. The Tauernradweg also follows the northern boundary of Hohe Tauern National Park.

Sigrid Pichler and Gabriele Wolf of the Austrian National Tourist Office in New York have several suggestions for cycling on the Hohe Tauern trail:

"Be sure to visit Zell am See, an idyllic lakeside town, where you can pick up a local cycling map and explore 40 different trails. Later, as you continue on to Salzburg, you'll pass the hilltop Hohenwerfen Castle and Golling, a perfectly preserved medieval town with outdoor cafés. Soon you'll reach Hallein, the former center of the millenia-old salt industry which paid for many of Salzburg's magnificent buildings."

(Guide's note: The Salzburg-Bad Dürnnberg Salt Mine tour is great fun, and it offers a break from the heat on summer days. The Eisriesenwelt Ice Caves near Werfen are also worth the short side trip.)

A Tauern Bicycle Path Guidebook is available from the Salzburg State Tourist Board. See its summer press releases page and scroll down to "The "Tauern Cycle Path. Along the Salzach and Saalach rivers" for a description and ordering information.
