The Call of the Mountains!
(Der Berg Ruft!)

Altenmarkt Austria The Call of the Mountains Der Berf Ruft! exhibition

ABOVE: Altenmarkt, a summer and winter resort in Land Salzburg, is the site of Der Berg Ruft! (ANTO).

Der Berg Ruft! ("The Call of the Mountains!") is an exhibition on the history of Austrian mountaineering. The show, the largest of its kind ever staged in Europe, is being staged in Altenmarkt, Salzburgerland through November 4, 2001.

Features of the exhibition include:

Photo/text exhibits. Large illustrated panels detail the history of Austrian mountaineering in the Alps and around the world over the last 200 years.

Multimedia. See film footage, view historic photographs, and hear sound recordings by touching large interactive computer screens in three darkened, acoustically insulated rooms.

Climbing tower/boulder wall. Try your skills or watch alpinists at work.

Special events. Climbing competitions, lectures by mountaineers, and other events will take place at regular intervals throughout the year-round exhibition.

Exhibition topics

Displays at the exhibition center are arranged into several groups:

Diretissima: Large Walls in the Alps, including the Eiger, Matterhorn, Mont Blanc, Bernina, Monte Rosa, Drei Zinnen, and Austria's Grossglockner (which was first climbed two centuries ago).

Peaks 8000 Plus: Rooftops of the World. Fourteen of the world's peaks rise above 8,000 meters, and Austrian mountaineers have played important roles in their exploration.

Women in the Mountains: A Breakthrough depicts "the role of women in the mountaineering world and their arduous ascent to equality."

Hidden Mountain Treasures: Myths, Tales and Legends covers the fables, fears, and beliefs connected with the Alps and other mountains around the world.

Ten Plus: The Thrill of Climbing conveys the excitement of mountaineering and changes that have taken place over the years (among them, the evolution of alpinism from traditional "heroic climbing" to an athletic and spiritual quest).
