Stockhornbahn
(Bernese Oberland)
Continued from page 1

Stockhorn - Simmental - Berner Oberland - Switzerland

ABOVE: Hiking on the Stockhorn.

Schedule

In summer, the Stockhornbahn runs from late May through early November and on the second Sunday of November if the weather is favorable. Cable cars leave the valley station every 30 minutes from morning until late afternoon. The cable car takes nine minutes to reach Chrindi, where a second cable car leaves six minutes later for the five-minute ride to the summit.

In winter, the the Stockhornbahn operates as a ski lift.

For timetables and ticket prices, see the official Web site (link below).

Food

The Stockhornbahn has two restaurants on the mountain:

  • Panoramarestaurant Stockhorn (summit; overnight rooms available)
  • Restaurant Chrindi (middle station)

A roundtrip ticket that includes a Stockhorn-Zmorge breakfast with Rösti (a buttery fried potato cake), ham, cheese, etc. is available daily until 10 a.m. during the summer season. This is a real bargain, since it costs only a few francs more than the standard fare for transportation alone.

Lodgings

At the Oberstockenalp, which is accessible on foot on the hiking trail between the Chrindi and summit stations, 30 beds are available in a mountain chalet during the summer season. For details in German, visit  www.oberstockenalp.ch.

For information on other lodgings in the area, see the Stockhornbahn's accommodation page.

Reaching the Stockhornbahn

By rail. The Stockhornbahn's valley station is at Erlenbach im Simmental, which is on railroad line 300.20 from Spiez to Zweisimmen in the Swiss Official Timetable. Spiez is easy to reach from Bern, Thun, or Interlaken.

The total trip time to Erlenbach i. S. is about 15 minutes from Spiez, 29 minutes from Thun, 38 minutes from Interlaken Ost, or 49 minutes from Bern. Trains run frequently throughout the day. (Avoid intercity express trains, which don't stop in Erlenbach.)

By car. You can reach Erlenbach i. S. from Gwatt or Spiez and park by the Stockhornbahn station. Consult a local road map for details.
