Swiss Food and Wine Festivals

Swiss food festivals

ABOVE: Bicycling through vineyards along Lake Biel/Bienne.

Switzerland Tourism reports that fall in Switzerland means "a cornucopia of foods and beverages that are celebrated with gusto." A spokesperson writes:

At Fribourg's bénichon, an elaborate thanksgiving meal, diners are treated to a special mustard concocted only for this particular feast. In the Ticino area, entire towns are given to celebrating chestnuts. Grape harvests everywhere in Switzerland inspire joyous festivities all over the country. Visitors who happen to be in Basel for the Autumn Fair will be regaled with a special candy called "mässmogge."

Of course, not all food and wine festivals occur during autumn; others take place during the summer, when warm days encourage outdoor eating and more tourists are on hand to enjoy the fun.
