'Switzerland My Way' Tours

with Amadé Perrig

By Durant Imboden

Normally, we don't have much to say about escorted tours, since we don't go on them (except for the occasional tourist-office press junket) and therefore can't judge their quality firsthand. We're making an exception by writing about "Switzerland My Way," because I've met Amadé Perrig, the organizer and host, on several occasions, and I can't imagine a better guide to Switzerland and its tourist attractions.

Mr. Perrig, a native of Switzerland, is the former director of the Zermatt Tourist Office. He continues to represent Zermatt and the Glacier Express sightseeing train in the United States, where he and his American-born wife live during the fall and winter. During the summer months, they live in Zermatt. (Click here to read his official biography.)

In 2008, Amadé Perrig is personally leading two "Switzerland My Way" tours from the U.S.: one from May 24 to June 3, and the other from August 30 to September 9. The 10-night itineraries feature two nights in Zürich, two nights in Lucerne, two nights in Zermatt, an overnight on or near Lake Geneva, and three nights in Interlaken. During the tour, you'll visit cheese and chocolate factories, ride mountain railways, eat lunch on a Swiss farm, visit a military fort, and explore the Ballenberg open-air history museum near Brienz. The price for each tour is US $4,600 per person, with shared rooms in 4-star hotels and most meals included. (Group size will be 20 to 30 people, depending on how many guests sign up.)

If you're partial to escorted tours and would like to see Switzerland's touristic highlights, "Switzerland My Way" is worth considering if only because Amadé Perrig is a delightful raconteur and an energetic, entertaining host. (If you go on the tour, ask him to tell you about his experience as a competitive yodeler--and if you're lucky, he'll demonstrate various styles of yodeling at the dinner table or on an Alpine slope in Switzerland.)

For more information about the "Switzerland My Way" tour, see the detailed tour program, which also has contact information for Amadé Perrig Travel. You can book directly with Amadé Perrig Travel or through your travel agent.
