The Bristol is a breath of fresh air after the heavy weather and super-ornate
Ostereichischerhof [now the Sacher] across the street. The reception area in peach and cream and
gilt immediately sets the tone, Rococo lightness against Baroque stateliness.
The 60 rooms are large and well proportioned, many with views over the square
and old town beyond. They are elegantly decorated in bright Rococo colours -
red, pink, yellow - with stuccoed ceilings and wall panels, cornices, and
ornately decorated bedheads. Floors one and two have tall ceilings and little
flower bedecked wrought iron balconies, with arched windows in many of the
second floor rooms. Comfortable, elegant and spacious, the Bristol is an
understated classic in every sense.
