Geneva - Christmas tree on Jet d'eau site

ABOVE: Geneva's Jet d'eau fountain will be replaced by a Christmas tree from December 1 through January 15.

(Archived News Story from 2001)

Geneva's International Christmas Tree Festival runs through Jan. 15

The Art Project Foundation, UNICEF, and the city of Geneva have organized the first International Christmas Tree Festival, which will "transform Geneva into a city of light" from December 1, 2001 through January 15, 2002.

Twenty-five Christmas trees, each decorated and lit by an eminent artist, will be installed in prominent positions around the lake and in the city center. From the Place Molard to the Pâquis Baths and the Bourg-de-Four, each tree will show off its unique decorations. The biggest tree of them all will stand in the place of Geneva's Jet d'eau fountain (see photo).

Daily events such as parties, street shows, competitions, and sponsors' receptions will take place during the six weeks of the festival--among them, a "best tree" competition with a jury drawn from celebrities in the art world.
