Mauthausen/Gusen

KZ Mauthausen-Gusen
The World War II concentration camps at Mauthausen and Gusen, Lower Austria, were said to be among the worst in the Third Reich.

Mauthausen Memorial
Jewish and non-Jewish prisoners from all over Europe were worked to death here between 1938 and 1945. Today, the camp is open to visitors as a reminder of the Holocaust. (Click "English" at the bottom of the page for an overview.)

Prisoners used primitive tools and their bare hands to carve stone from the quarry. The stone was then used to build the main camp.
