Uptown Minneapolis

Uptown Minneapolis, a book from Arcadia Publishing, uses photos from public and private collections to document and celebrate the history of what we know today as Uptown. From the Minneapolis Arena--home of the Ice Follies and Minneapolis Millers--to the neighborhoods' lakes and majestic homes, the Buzza Greeting Card factory, and the old Calhoun and West High schools, this book takes readers on a scenic journey through the heritage of this much-loved community in pictures and text.

Things you should know:

• Uptown Minneapolis has won a 2005 Heritage Preservation Award from the Minneapolis Heritage Preservation Commission and the Minnesota Chapter of the American Institute of Architects.

• Co-author Thatcher Imboden is president of the Uptown Association in Minneapolis, He also publishes OurUptown.com, a Web site with articles, a business directory, and other material of interest to Uptown residents and visitors, with contributions by Cedar Imboden Phillips, Anders Imboden, and other authors.

• The authors have written a sequel to Uptown Minneapolis titled Lyn-Lake, which was published by Arcadia in 2011. The new book describes a vibrant and historically-interesting area of Minneapolis that is centered around the intersection of Lyndale Avenue South and West Lake Street.

About the authors:

• Thatcher Imboden and Cedar Imboden Phillips were born and raised in Uptown Minneapolis.

• Thatcher Imboden earned an Urban Studies degree from the University of Minnesota in 2005 and has worked as a volunteer for the Uptown Art Fair for seven years.

• Cedar Imboden Phillips has degrees in history and Scandinavian studies from the University of Minnesota, and a master's degree from the Winterthur Museum and the University of Delaware. She has done extensive volunteer work at the Hennepin History Museum, was executive director of the Warren County Heritage Society in Virginia, and is currently on the staff of Georgetown's Tudor Place Historic House and Garden in Washington, D.C.
