The
Ponte dell'Accademia,
or Accademia Bridge,
crosses the Grand Canal between the sestieri of Dorsoduro and
San Marco. It's a key link in the main pedestrian route from the
Piazzale Roma (where buses
and taxis bring passengers to edge of the historic center) and the
tourist area around the
Piazza San Marco.
In the top aerial photo, you can see:
-
The final curve of the
Grand Canal where it feeds into
St. Mark's
Basin.
-
The Accademia Bridge
itself, which is the grey line across the canal right above the word
"Accademia." Just above it is the Campo
San Stefano, the second-largest square in the sestiere
or district of San Marco.
-
The tip of Dorsoduro
(just to the right of the
Santa Maria della
Salute church), with its historic
Dogana di Mare customs
house.
-
The Piazza San Marco
and Piazzetta in the upper right corner of the photo.
The lower photo zeroes in on the bridge and its
immediate surroundings. Look for:
-
The wooden Ponte
dell'Accademia, which was built in 1932 as a temporary bridge
(replacing a steel bridge from 1854).
-
The Accademia Gallery,
an important art museum just to the left of the bridge.
-
Floating platforms of the Accademia
vaporetto
station, where the No. 1 water bus stops as it zigzags up and down
the Grand Canal on its way from the Piazzale Roma and the
Santa Lucia
Railroad Station to the Piazza San Marco and the Lido di
Venezia.
Tip: You'll find a
public lavatory beneath the
left stairway from the bridge, just across from the Accademia Gallery.
