Piazzale Roma

Continued from page 1

Venice, Italy parking garage - Piazzale Roma

ABOVE: The city-owned parking garage in the Piazzale Roma. (The "Generali" sign is an ad for an insurance company, not the name of the garage.)

Parking

Again, parking at Tronchetto is easier than struggling with the confusion at the Piazzale Roma--at least on weekends or in high season, when lines can be horrific. An even better option during high season is to park on the mainland and take public transportation into the city. In summer, during Carnival, and at Easter, you can park in open-air lots at San Giuliano and Fusina in Mestre. (San Giulano may be the most convenient; it's to the left of the overpass as you approach the lagoon. Fusina is to the south, next to a campground, and is a bit cheaper for periods of 24 hours or longer.)

If you're traveling in the off-season (especially on a weekday), the Piazzale Roma may be worth considering--especially when you have several people in your car. Teresa Plowright of Travel With Kids explains why:

"We found that parking at the Piazzale Roma Roma had one advantage over Tronchetto, in that we didn't have to take a vaporetto. We just walked right into Venice."

It's true that the savings on waterbus fares can be substantial if you're footing the bill for an entire family. However, if you're planning to buy a tourist ticket (which allows unlimited travel on Venice's transportation system for 24 hours or longer), you can avoid the vaporetto fare by purchasing your tourist ticket at Tronchetto.

Baggage storage

Look for a deposito bagagli, or left-luggage office, opposite the ACTV ticket office (next to the Pullman Bar). To check hours and prices ahead of time, phone the Cooperativa Trasbagagli at 0415231107 or e-mail info@trasbagagli.it.
