Venice, Italy - Salute Church

ABOVE: Santa Maria della Salute Church at dusk.

Churches extend hours, charge admission

Tourists are often frustrated by the limited visiting hours at Venice's most beautiful and popular churches. To keep visitors from being disappointed, 13 Venice churches have extended their visiting hours by doing away with the traditional lunch break and staying open later in the afternoon. The new hours are:

Monday-Saturday 10 a.m. - 6 p.m.
Sunday 3 p.m. - 6 p.m. *
* Sunday morning masses are open to tourists, but sightseeing is strongly discouraged during worship services, and offenders may be asked to leave.

To cover the expense of more custodians, the participating churches are now charging a modest entrance fee.

La Fenice reconstruction

Venice's 160-year-old opera house, the Teatro La Fenice, was gutted by fire on January 29, 1996. After a long period of reconstruction, the theatre reopened in late 2003.

For information on performance schedules and tickets, see the Teatro La Fenice Web site.
