Location: In a quiet neighborhood of Cannaregio, on the Fondamenta della Sensa. Closest Alilaguna Airport Boat stop: Madonna dell'Orto.

Convenient when:

You want peace and quiet in a neighborhood that's away from the crowds but within walking distance of the sights. (The hotel is especially convenient for late arrivals or early departures at Marco Polo Airport, since Madonna dell'Orto is only 30 minutes from the airport by boat.)

The Hotel Ai Mori d'Oriente is housed in a 15th Century palazzo on the Rio della Sensa, a sunny canal with a long promenade where you'll find restaurants, café-bars, and just enough local shops to remind you that you're outside of the main tourist district. Rooms vary from classic or standard doubles to junior suites, some with extra beds. The building is wheelchair-accessible and has an elevator. (There's also an American bar where you can enjoy drinks and food at outdoor tables during the warmer months.)

• Note: Hotel Ai Mori d'Oriente has reasonable rates for a hotel of its caliber, so you'll avoid crowds and save money by booking a room in its slightly out-of-the-way location in a largely residential neighborhood.
