Two-star hotel.
Location: On the Cannaregio Canal,
within a few minutes of the railroad station (with no bridges to cross).
Convenient when:
You
want to be near the train station, and you'd prefer an economical hotel
just off the main tourist route.
The Hotel Hesperia is only about five minutes from the
Santa Lucia
Railroad Station, but it feels a world away: The hotel faces the
Cannaregio Canal, a wide canal that runs between the Grand Canal and the
Venetian Lagoon. On the hotel's side of the canal, you'll find quiet
residential neighborhoods; across the canal is the
Ghetto Ebraico, the oldest
Jewish ghetto in Europe. The hotel is also close to the Strada Nova, a
lively middle-class shopping street that runs toward the
Rialto Bridge and the
Piazza San Marco.
Inside
the Hotel Hesperia, you'll find 16 renovated guest rooms, some with
canal views. The hotel also has a lounge, a top-floor terrace, and a
patio where breakfast is served during the warmer months. (There's no
elevator, however, and Wi-Fi isn't free.)

-
In the first satellite image, you
can see the walking route from the train station: Turn left as you
leave the station, follow the crowd up the Rio Terà Lista di Spagna,
then turn left again just before the Ponte delle Guglie. Walk a
short distance along the Cannaregio Canal until you reach the hotel,
which is at the foot of the Calle Riello (about a third of the way
along the embankment).
-
In the second photo, which was taken from across the
canal, you can see the Hotel Hesperia facing the water. (The hotel
is the small tan building on the streetcorner near the right side of
the frame.)
