Hotel Palazzo Stern

ABOVE: The Hotel Palazzo Stern has a terrace and garden alongside the
Grand Canal.
Category:
Four-star hotel.
Location: On the Grand Canal in
Dorsoduro, next to the Ca' Rezzonico vaporetto stop. (See
photo.) Closest
Alilaguna Airport Boat
stop: Rialto. Convenient
when:
You want the experience of living--however briefly--in an historic
palazzo on the Grand Canal, while experiencing modern comforts in
an elegant boutique hotel.
The
Palazzo Stern has a Venetian Byzantine exterior, but its 24 rooms and
suites are decorated in 18th Century style. The embroidered wall
fabrics, oriental carpets, Murano glass light fixtures, and other
throwbacks to the Baroque Era are complemented by such modern
touches as satellite TV, coffeemakers, and free Wi-Fi in every room.
(You'll even find a Jacuzzi hot tub on the roof if you can tear yourself
away from the waterside terrace, where breakfast is served in good
weather.)
Accommodations
range from single rooms to large suites, many overlooking the Grand
Canal. Prices aren't cheap, but if you're partial to watching boat
traffic or you want a romantic hotel for your honeymoon or getaway
weekend in Venice, the Palazzo Stern should be on your short list.
Note: The Hotel Palazzo Stern isn't
very convenient to Alilaguna airport boats, the Piazzale Roma, or the
railway station, although you can take the Alilaguna boat to San Marco
or Rialto and change to the No. 1 water bus. If you're arriving or
departing by water taxi,
you're in luck, because the hotel has a boat landing.

-
In the first satellite image, the Hotel Palazzo
Stern is on the left side of the Grand Canal near the white
rectangle (the Ca' Rezzonico vaporetto pier) just below the
Calle del Traghetto. Other landmarks in the photo include the
Accademia Bridge
and (above the bridge) the
Campo San Stefano, which is on the main walking route to the
Piazza San Marco.
-
In the second photo, the Hotel Palazzo Stern is left
of the vaporetto platform and Ca' Rezzonico near the right
side of the frame. If you look carefully, you'll see the hotel's
breakfast terrace alongside the Grand Canal and a smaller canal, the
Rio Malpaga.
