ABOVE: A hotel in Venice.

Abbazia ***
The Hotel Abbazia is in Cannaregio, a short walk from the railroad station. Its 39 rooms are in the restored Barefooted Carmelite Friars of Venice monastery complex, which has a private garden in the former cloisters.

Pensione Accademia Villa Maravege ***
This 400-year-old villa has many repeat visitors, thanks to a peaceful setting near the Gallerie dell'Accademia in Dorsoduro and two gardens--one overlooking the San Trovaso Canal. It was also featured in the Katherine Hepburn movie Summertime. (Warning: You'll normally need to book several months ahead to get one of its 27 rooms.)

Hotel Ai Tolentini *
The Piazzale Roma is only a short walk from this hotel, which is named after the nearby Tolentini church. Some rooms have private baths. See guest comments.

Ala ***
This ever-popular Best Western affiliate is on the pretty Campo Santa Maria del Giglio, between the Piazza San Marco and the Accademia Bridge. It's a bit more expensive than some of the three-star hotels listed here, but the location is hard to beat and the buffet breakfast is generous by Italian standards.

Hotel Al Gallo ***
The Basile family owns this hotel in Santa Croce. From the railroad station or the Piazzale Roma, the hotel is a 10- or 15-minute walk in the direction of the Frari Church and the Campo Santa Margherita. See guest comments.

Hotel Alex *
San Polo is one of the more lively, less touristy areas of Venice, and the Alex is in the middle of this delightful neighborhood near the Frari Church. Guest comments are extremely favorable.

Hotel Al Gazzettino *
The Gazzettino is in a good location for shoppers, with the Mercerie shopping streets close by and both the Piazza San Marco and the Rialto Bridge within easy walking distance. One guest comment warns: "Be prepared to be woken up by singing Gondoliers!"

Hotel Allogi Henry *
This inexpensive hotel is near the Ghetto Nuovo in a pleasant and lively residential section of Cannaregio. It's within easy walking distance of the railroad station but off the main tourist track.

Hotel Al Vagon*
The Rialto Bridge is a five-minute walk from this family-owned property, which is also close to the main pedestrian route between the railroad station and the Piazza San Marco. (Some guests complain of noise from the adjacent square; others consider that to be a fair tradeoff for a central location.)

Locanda Al Soffiador (Murano) *
Not many tourists stay on Murano, the "glass island", which is in the Venetian lagoon and about 10 minutes from the historic center by water bus. See guest comments.

Hotel Amadeus ****
The Amadeus is on a major pedestrian thoroughfare near the railway station, about a 30-minute walk from the Piazza San Marco. See guest comments.

Hotel Ambassador Tre Rose ***
From this hotel's location on the Calle dei Fabbri, the Piazza San Marco is just a couple of minutes away. It has 35 rooms and apartments, some with balconies.

Hotel American Dinesen ***
Don't let the name throw you--the American is a thoroughly Venetian albergo on a quiet canal within walking distance of the Accademia vaporetto stop. Some rooms have canal views, and breakfast is served on a terrace during the warmer months. See guest comments.

Anastasia ***
The Anastasia is in San Marco, just inland from where the Grand Canal meets St. Mark's Basin. This recently renovated hotel is especially convenient if you're arriving on the Alilaguna airport boat, which calls at the San Marco Vallaresso vaporetto stop nearby.

Antica Locanda Al Gambero *
All 27 rooms have private bathrooms at this newly renovated hotel on the Calle dei Fabbri, a few blocks from the Caffè Quadri on the Piazza San Marco. See guest comments.

Hotel Antico Panada ***
The main tourist attractions are within easy reach of the Panada, which occupies a 17th Century house in the "Street of Mirrors" near St. Mark's Square. Rooms are furnished in Venetian style, and some have Jacuzzis.

Hotel Ariel Silva *
The Ariel Silva is in Cannaregio, about 7 minutes from the railway station and 10 minutes from the Piazzale Rome on foot. Breakfast is served in a private garden (open in summer, covered and heated in winter).

Hotel Arlecchino ***
The Arlecchino, a.k.a. Harlequin, is a newly renovated  hotel just off the Piazzale Roma. It's convenient if you have to catch an early-morning bus to the airport.

Hotel Art Decó **
The Art Decó is behind the Palazzo Grassi, close to the Accademia Bridge and about 10 minutes on foot from the Piazza San Marco. The hotel is surrounded by antiques shops and art dealers. Double, triple, and quad rooms have air conditioning, private bathrooms, and new orthopedic mattresses.
See guest comments.

Hotel Bauer *****
The historic (and opulent) Il Palazzo section of the former Hotel Bauer Grunwald & Grand hotel overlooks the Grand Canal. The 1940s addition behind it is less attractive but undeniably luxurious. See guest comments.

Hotel Boston (Royal San Marco) ***
This hotel has changed its name to the Royal San Marco, but its location remains as convenient as always: directly behind the Piazza San Marco, not far from Venice's most popular tourist attractions and the airport boat's pier. See guest comments.

Ca' Doge ***
The Ca' Doge is a "town house suites, 1st category," which corresponds to a 3-star hotel. Ca' Doge is on the Piazzale Roma (making it handy for early cruise or airport departures), offers free ADSL Internet access, and has a parking garage.

Ca' San Trovaso **
This renovated hotel is in Dorsoduro, not far from the Zattere and the ancient squero, or boatyard, where Venice's gondolas are built by hand. In summer, you can relax outdoors on the altana, or roof garden. Try for a room with a courtyard or canal view. See guest comments.

Hotel Canal and Walter ***
From the Piazzale Roma, the Canal & Walter is just a short walk along the fondamenta; the hotel is also handy to the railway station. See guest comments.

Hotel Ca' Pisani ****
This 29-room boutique hotel in Dorsoduro combines Art Deco and modern design themes. It's located 50 meters from the Accademia vaporetto stop.

Hotel Carlton & Grand Canal
The 150 rooms in this upscale hotel were redecorated in 18th Century Venetian style during 2000. The hotel has a bar, a winter garden, and a conference center. It's located in Santa Croce, within walking distance of the railroad station.

Hotel Carlton Capri ***
The Capri is on a quiet street in the sestieri of Santa Croce, where it's easy to reach from the train station. The Frari Church and the Scuola di San Rocco are also nearby.

Hotel Casa Boccassini *
You can choose between private and shared baths at this hotel in Cannaregio, which is convenient to the Fondamenta Nuove stop of the Venice airport boat. Rooms with private baths also have TV and air conditioning.

Hotel Casanova ***
The Casanova is 50 meters from the Piazza San Marco in an upscale shopping street, the Calle Frezzeria. Rooms are furnished in 1930s style. See guest comments.

Hotel Cavaletto e Doge Orseolo ****
This hotel facing a gondola basin occupies a 13th Century building that was rebuilt in the 1800s and expanded in 1994. Rates include a buffet breakfast.

Hotel Centauro ***
From the Rialto vaporetto stop, walk inland to Campo Marin. (The No. 1 boat's platform is closest to the hotel.) See guest comments.

Hotel Cipriani *****
Not sure what to do with your yacht when you're in Venice? Park it in the Cipriani's 10-berth marina, then bask in luxury at one of Italy's most highly regarded hotels. The Cipriani also owns the more intimate Palazzo Vendramin and the Palazzetto Nani Barbaro, which are open year-round. See my illustrated Hotel Cipriani article.

Hotel Colombina ****
This new 32-room hotel occupies a renovated building in Castello, 150 meters from the Piazza San Marco. If you arrive at the hotel's private boat landing by water taxi or gondola, you'll pass beneath the Bridge of Sighs.

Hotel Concordia ****
For the most enviable hotel view in Venice, book one of the two rooms with balconies that overlook the Piazzetta at St. Mark's Square. (That is, if you can get a reservation, which is more easily said than done.)

Hotel Danieli *****
Another former Doge's residence with 222 rooms. It's worth the price if you enjoy luxury--and if your room overlooks St. Mark's Basin. See review.

Hotel Da Bruno ***
Front rooms at the Da Bruno overlook La Boutique del Gelato, which the native Venetians at WalksInsideVenice say is the best ice-cream shop in the city. The 32-room hotel is on the Salizzada San Lio, about 5 minutes from the Rialto Bridge and St. Mark's Square.

Grand Hotel Dei Dogi *****
This former ambassador's residence is on a quiet fondamenta in the delightful Madonna dell'Orto neighborhood on the northern edge of Cannaregio. The Dei Dogi is a long walk from San Marco, so it works best for leisurely stays.

Hotel Domina Giudecca ***
If you're looking for peace and quiet during high season, the Domina Giudecca is worth considering: It's on the island of Giudecca, which is a short ride from the Zattere or the Piazza San Marco by public waterbus. (To save on transportation, you'll want to buy an Actv vaporetto tourist ticket or a Venice Card.)

Hotel Doni *
For an inexpensive hotel, the Doni enjoys an outstanding location: It's slightly east of the Piazza San Marco and not far inland from the S. Zaccaria vaporetto station. Most rooms have sink only, with shower and WC in the hall (and sometimes on a different floor).

Hotel Europa e Regina *****
This perfectly situated Westin luxury hotel is below the Piazza San Marco on the Grand Canal, with a nice view of the Salute church. See review.
