Gritti Palace photo

ABOVE: Hotel Gritti Palace.

Antica Locanda Montin **
This tiny, 200-year-old inn is known primarily for its outstanding restaurant, but its 12 rooms have long been popular with artists, writers, and history buffs who value tradition and antique furnishings over modern comforts. The hotel is near the Campo San Barnaba. See guest comments.

Hotel Falier **
All rooms have showers at the Falier, which is reasonably priced by Venice standards and is near the delightful Campo Santa Margherita and the Frari Church. The Piazzale Roma and the railroad station are about 10 minutes away on foot. See guest comments.

Firenze ***
The Albergo Firenze is just 30 meters from the Piazza San Marco. The hotel has 25 rooms. Fourth-floor rooms have private balconies, and the top floor includes a terrace with scenic views. See guest comments.

Hotel Flora ****
Jamie Dunford Wood describes the family-run Flora as being "within a stone’s throw of St Marks and the Grand Canal, with the sound of birdsong and a secluded garden. The open guestbook in the small lobby testifies to some very ecstatic customers."

Hotel Florida **
The Florida is 100 meters from the railway station by the Ponte degli Scalzi bridge. Rooms are air-conditioned, with telephone jacks for modems, and guests receive a 50% discount at the Tronchetto parking garage. See guest comments.

Hotel Gabrieli Sandwirth ****
This pleasantly old-fashioned hotel is on the Riva degli Schiavoni and was featured in a 1990s movie, Blame it on the Bellboy.

Hotel Giorgione ****
The palazzo near the Rialto Bridge may be 500 years old, but its 56 rooms were completely refurbished in the late 1990s. See guest comments.

Hotel Gritti Palace *****
Jamie Dunford Wood says the Gritti is "probably Venice's best hotel." The former Renaissance palace of the Doge Gritti overlooks the Grand Canal, and it's the only place to stay if you're a visiting monarch or oligarch. See review.

Hotel Hesperia **
The Hesperia overlooks the Canarregio Canal from its location near the railway station, the Ghetto, and the Lista di Spagna. Rooms include doubles and triples.

Hotel Hungaria Palace (Lido) ****
Unless you're a diehard Bauhaus buff, you'll love the over-the-top Art Nouveau tiled façade of this century-old resort hotel on the Lido's Gran Viale Santa Elisabetta. The hotel is nicely situated, with the beach in one direction and the vaporetto stop to the city enter in the other. It's a good choice for a summer honeymoon or a beach weekend.

Hotel Kette ***
Wood-paneled rooms and marble baths give a feeling of luxury to this pleasant three-star hotel, which is located a few blocks from St. Mark's Square near the San Moisé Church. The front rooms have street views.

Hotel La Residenza **
The former Palazzo Gritti-Badoer has a 15th Century façade that incorporates Byzantine fragments from the 10th Century, and the lounge could have been plucked from an aristocrat's mansion. The hotel is slightly inland from the Riva degli Schaivioni, between the Piazza San Marco and Arsenale. Warning: It can be very difficult to get a room here, so I'd suggest having a backup if your booking is refused.

Hotel Londra Palace ****
The "London Palace," a member of the prestigious Relais & Chateaux group, is near the Piazza San Marco. All rooms are furnished with antiques; many have balconies. The Londra Palace is especially convenient if you're arriving or departing by air, since the pier for the airport boat is close by.

Locanda del Ghetto *** See illustrated article
If you're Jewish or simply have an interest in the Venetian Ghetto, try this newish hotel in Venice's historic Jewish quarter. It's next door to the Museo Ebraico and a synagogue; a kosher restaurant is close by.

Luna Hotel Baglione ***** See illustrated review
"Venice's oldest inn," which traces its history to the 12th Century, lies just behind the narrow end of the trapezoid-shaped Piazza San Marco. Its 118 rooms are lavishly decorated in a traditional Venetian style, and a sun terrace overlooks St. Mark's Basin.

Hotel Metropole ****
Some 2,000 antiques are scattered throughout the Metropole's public areas and 72 guest rooms. The hotel is on the Riva degli Schiavoni, facing the Basino di San Marco and the island of San Giorgio Maggiore. Some rooms face the water, while others look out on a private garden. See guest comments.

Monaco & Grand Hotel ****
You can catch a vaporetto or gondola just outside the door of this hotel at the top of the Grand Canal, where front-facing rooms have a view of St. Mark's Basin and the sometimes noisy boat traffic. See guest comments and a review.

Hotel Montecarlo ***
Triple rooms are available at this Best Western affiliate, which is only 50 meters (or about half the length of a football field) from the Piazza San Marco.

NH Manin ****
This outpost of an upscale Spanish hotel group opened in 2004. It occupies a restored 19th Century palazzo on the Grand Canal next to the S. Angelo vaporetto stop. When the weather is warm, breakfast is served on a patio in the hotel's walled garden.

Hotel Noemi *
This newly renovated family-run hotel is just off the Piazza San Marco. Eight of the 16 rooms have private baths, and all have satellite TV. Best of all, the Noemi's single, double, triple, and quad rates are extremely reasonable for such a convenient location. See user comments.

Hotel Olimpia ***
The Olimpia is very close to the Piazzale Roma, the arrival point for cars, taxis, and buses from the mainland. The railroad station is also nearby. I wouldn't recommend the location for an extended stay (although it's certainly safe enough), but it's handy if you're spending only a night or two in Venice and have an early departure. See guest comments.

Locanda Ovidius ***
The Ovidius is on the San Polo side of the Grand Canal. Some guestrooms (along with the breakfast rooms) have views of the Rialto Bridge, with double-glazed windows to minimize noise from passing vaporetti. Rates are reasonable, and guests have access to an Internet terminal in the lounge.
