Hotel Palazzo Bembo
***
This hotel is located high up in a 14th Century Venetian Gothic palace on the
Grand Canal near the Rialto Bridge. The route from the hotel to the Piazza San
Marco is a straight line, so you shouldn't get lost.
Hotel Palazzo Priuli
***
The family that built this 14th Century home claims three doges, 14 procurators,
and five cardinals. Today, the palazzo is a first-class hotel with a
variety of accommodations--including doubles, triples, connecting rooms, and
junior suites (at least one of which has a fireplace).
Hotel Papadopoli Venezia ****
The Papaodopoli, formerly the Sofitel, is part of the AccorHotels "Made in
Italy" quality group. It's near the Tolentini church,
behind the public gardens by the Piazzale Roma, and it has a bar and restaurant
on the premises. The Papadopoli's location is especially
convenient for air travelers and cruise passengers.
Hotel Pausinia ***
The Pausinia occupies a Venetian Gothic palazzo in Dorsoduro, in the San
Barnaba neighborhood near Venice's last remaining fruit and vegetable barge. The
Accademia Gallery and the Scuola Grande dei Carmini are close by.
Hotel Principe ****
This hotel faces the Grand Canal. Behind it is the Lista di Spagna, a pedestrian
thoroughfare that leads to the railroad station nearby. The area is pleasant
enough and convenient if you don't feel like hauling your luggage aboard a
crowded waterbus.
Hotel Rialto ***
Of this hotel's 80 rooms, 28 face the Grand Canal. The Rialto Bridge is nearby,
giving easy access to churches, museums, and other sights on both sides of the
canal. Vaporetto routes 1 (local) and 2 (express) stop right in front of the
hotel.
Locanda Salieri *
Wi-fi is a perk at the inexpensive Salieri, which one guest has described as
a "lovely welcoming little hotel." It's in Santa Croce, within a fairly short
walk of the Piazzale Roma.
San Clemente
Palace ***** See
illustrated review
This luxury hotel occupies a beautifully landscaped 17-acre private island
beyond Giudecca, where it has 205 rooms, a swimming pool and tennis courts, a
12th Century church, and free boat service to the Piazza San Marco.
Hotel
Royal San Marco ***
The former Hotel Boston has a great location: directly behind the Piazza San
Marco, not far from Venice's most popular tourist attractions and the airport
boat's pier.
Hotel San Gallo ***
With a location just north of the Piazza San Marco, 12 air-conditioned rooms,
and a roof terrace where you can enjoy breakfast on sunny days, the San Gallo is
a good bet in the medium-priced category.
Hotel Sant' Elena ****
To get away from the crowds, head for the Sant' Elena residential neighborhood
near the tip of Venice's historic center, which you can reach on foot or by
vaporetto. The Hotel Sant' Elena is especially pleasant in spring, summer, or
fall, when you can enjoy the deck chairs in the garden. Rates include a buffet
breakfast, and the hotel is wheelchair-accessible.
Hotel San Marco Palace ****
26 one- and two-bedroom suites make the San Marco Palace a good option if you're
traveling with a family or feel cramped in a standard hotel room. A buffet
breakfast is included. The hotel is through an arch and across a short bridge
from the Piazza San Marco.
Hotel San Maurizio *
This hotel in the San Marco district has three room categories. You can choose
between a private or shared bathroom, depending on your budget.
Guest comments are mixed, although ratings seem to have improved since the
hotel underwent renovations in 2005.
Hotel San Moisè ***

illustrated review
This three-star hotel in San Marco is
perfect for a honeymoon or romantic weekend--especially if you book a room
overlooking Venice's most musical gondola canal
Hotel San Zulian
***
It's a three-minute walk from the Piazza San Marco to the three-star San Zulian,
where accommodations range from singles to quads.
Hotel Saturnia & International
****
A Gothic palace from the 14th Century with attractive rooms and a nice location
on the Calle larga XXII Marzo, a few minutes' walk beyond the corner archway in
the narrow or enclosed end of St. Mark's Square.
Hotel Savoia & Jolanda ****
The Savoia is a short walk from the Doge's Palace on the Riva degli Schiavoni.
You can board a gondola right in front of the hotel.
Locanda
Silva
Signor Ettore and his daughter have run the Silva since 1956. All 23
rooms have been renovated and have private bathrooms, and the location is
convenient for this price range: It's just a few blocks from the Piazza San
Marco and the Zaccaria vaporetto stop.
Sofitel Venezia ****
This upscale hotel near the Piazzale Roma is now the
Hotel Papadopoli Venezia (four stars), although the sign on the outside
still said "Sofitel" the last time we looked. It's popular with cruise guests and
airline passengers who have early departures.
Locanda Ss. Giovanni e Paolo **
With a location near the church of the same name, the Locanda Ss. Giovanni e
Paolo is convenient for sightseeing but off the main tourist track. Rooms have
beamed ceilings and are furnished in 18th Century Venetian style.
Hotel
Starhotel Splendide Suisse ****
This hotel lies on the main retail thoroughfare between the Piazza San Marco and
the Rialto Bridge. Ask for an Executive Room if you feel like splurging.
Hotel
Torino
***
Shoppers will like the Torino's location on the Via XXII Marzo; its neighbors
include Prada, Versace, Magli, Vuitton, Biagiotti, and Bulgari..
Hotel Tre Archi ***
This hotel, which opened in 2001, faces the Cannaregio Canal. The Venetian
Ghetto is just a minute or two away, and the hotel is also easy to reach from
the railway station and the Piazzale Roma.
Hotel Villa Rossa *
The Santa Lucia railroad station is only 100 meters away from the Villa Rossa,
which is located just off the main pedestrian thoroughfare between the station
and the Piazza San Marco. The hotel has 33 bedrooms, all with private bath, plus
a garden where you can eat or drink outdoors in summer.
Hotel
Wildner **
The former Pensione Wildner faces St. Mark's Basin, a short walk along the
waterfront from the Basilica and the Doge's Palace. It's a good choice for
travelers who can't afford the Danieli but crave a hotel (and maybe a room) with
a view.
