ABOVE: In this satellite photo of the Viale Stazione in Mestre, you can see three hotels directly opposite the station: The Best Western Hotel Bologna, the Hotel Plaza, and the Hotel Tritone. Cross the street from your hotel, and a train will get you to Venice in 10-12 minutes.

Our top recommendations

The following three hotels are great choices if you plan to use Mestre as a base for excursions into Venice. All three are directly across the street from the Mestre Railroad Station, which is served by the ATVO Fly Bus from Marco Polo Airport.

Inexpensive trains to Venice depart frequently and take only 10 to 12 minutes to reach the city center. If you're headed for the Marittima or San Basilio cruise terminals, you can hire a taxi for about 30.

Don't let the four-star rankings of these hotels put you off if you're on a budget: Rates are quite reasonable, especially by Venice standards.

  • Best Western Hotel BolognaBest Western Hotel Bologna
This is an outstanding hotel, especially for the price. The hotel has been around for more than a century, but its interior is thoroughly up-to-date. Services include a book exchange, free Wi-Fi, and a number of free Internet terminals in the lobby. Parking is available at the hotel, and you can choose from two restaurants: the upscale Datura or the more affordable Datura Quick Lunch and a bar-bistro. (Gluten-free products are available in the breakfast room by special request.)

  • Hotel Plaza
The Plaza is modern, with 210 guest rooms. All rooms have free Wi-Fi, parking is available at the "Parking Stazione" next door, and there's a stylish bistro-caf, the Soul Kitchen, at street level.

  • Hotel Tritone
The Tritone is a renovated 1960s hotel with free Wi-Fi, two PCs in the lobby, and parking next door. Like the Bologna and Plaza, it has high ratings from guests who have reserved through our booking partner, Venere.

Other hotels in Mestre

  • If you're primarily interested in using Mestre as a base for travel to Venice, your best bet is a hotel directly across from the Mestre Railroad Station. See "our top recommendations" above or consider the three-star Cris, Regit, or Roberta, which are fairly close to the Stazione.

  • Hotel Al VivitAlternatively, a hotel near a city bus route to Venice's Piazzale Roma or the Mestre train station may be worth considering. Examples include the three-star Al Vivit (inset photo) and Venezia in Mestre's historic center, or the tour- and business-oriented Ambasciatori and Delfino on the busy, modern Corso del Popolo.

  • Staying at a hotel near the Autostrada, or on the outskirts of Mestre toward Marco Polo Airport, makes sense only if you're looking for a place to spend your last night before driving to the airport and dropping off your rental car. Examples of such hotels include the Titian Inn Hotel & Residence and the Hotel Antony.

  • For more mainland hotel possibilities, see Venere's Mestre hotel listings. (Tip: Some of the hotels are in Marghera, a suburb on the other side of the railroad tracks from Mestre. The residential areas of Marghera are pleasant and quiet, but downtown Mestre has more to offer visitors.)

Location can be important in a car-free city with 400+ bridges, especially when you're walking with luggage. Before you book, see:
