Venice Three-Star Hotels

Hotel San Moise photoHotel San Moisè  See illustrated review
This three-star hotel in San Marco is perfect for a honeymoon or romantic weekend--especially if you book a room overlooking Venice's most musical gondola canal.

Hotel Ai Due FanaliAi Due Fanali
Sixteen affordable rooms, a rooftop terrace, and a romantic setting next to the Grand Canal are three good reasons to consider this cozy hotel. As a bonus, it's only 5 minutes from the railroad station or 10 minutes from the Piazzale Roma on foot. See our illustrated review
.

Hotel Abbazia photoAbbazia
The Hotel Abbazia is in Cannaregio, a short walk from the railroad station. Its 39 rooms occupy the former Barefooted Carmelite Friars of Venice monastery complex, which was recently restored and has a private garden.

Hotel Ala photoAla
This ever-popular Best Western affiliate is on the pretty Campo Santa Maria del Giglio, between the Piazza San Marco and the Accademia Bridge. It's a bit more expensive than some of the three-star hotels listed here, but the location is hard to beat and the buffet breakfast is generous by Italian standards.

Alloggi Marinella
(See "Locanda Marinella" below. We've stayed at the Marienella and recommend it highly, especially if you want to be near the Piazzale Roma or the Venice Cruise Terminal.)

Hotel Anastasia photoAnastasia
The Anastasia is in San Marco, just inland from where the Grand Canal meets St. Mark's Basin. This recently renovated hotel is especially convenient if you're arriving on the Alilaguna airport boat, which calls at the San Marco Vallaresso vaporetto stop nearby.

Antica Locanda Al Gambero
All 27 rooms have private bathrooms at this newly renovated hotel on the Calle dei Fabbri, a few blocks from the Caffè Quadri on the Piazza San Marco. Walk in the other direction, and you'll reach the Rialto Bridge.

Pensione Accademia Villa Maravege
This 27-room villa next to the San Trovaso Canal once served as the Russian embassy to the Venetian Republic. It's popular with Katherine Hepburn fans (scenes in the movie Summertime were shot here) and with loyal guests, especially Americans, who value its genteel old-fashioned atmosphere and lovely gardens. (Book several months in advance unless you're visiting in the dead of winter.)

Hotel Al Gallo
The Basile family owns this hotel in Santa Croce. From the railroad station or the Piazzale Roma, the hotel is a 10- or 15-minute walk in the direction of the Frari Church and the Campo Santa Margherita.

Hotel Ambassador Tre Rose
From this hotel's location on the Calle dei Fabbri, the Piazza San Marco is just a couple of minutes away. It has 35 rooms and apartments, some with balconies.

Hotel American Dinesen photoHotel American Dinesen
Don't let the name throw you--the American is a thoroughly Venetian albergo on a quiet canal within walking distance of the Accademia vaporetto stop. Some rooms have canal views, and breakfast is served on a terrace during the warmer months.

Hotel Antico Panada
The main tourist attractions are within easy reach of the Panada, which occupies a 17th Century house in the "Street of Mirrors" near St. Mark's Square. Rooms are furnished in Venetian style, and some have Jacuzzis..

Hotel Arlecchino photoHotel Arlecchino
The Arlecchino, a.k.a. Harlequin, is a newly renovated  hotel just off the Piazzale Roma. It's convenient if you have to catch an early-morning bus to the airport.

Hotel Biasutti Villa Ada photoBiasutti Villa Ada (Lido)
Guests at this less expensive annex of the four-star Biasutti Hotels (see above) have use of the main hotels' facilities.

Hotel Boston (Royal San Marco)
This hotel has changed its name to the Royal San Marco, but its location remains as convenient as always: directly behind the Piazza San Marco, not far from Venice's most popular tourist attractions and the airport boat's pier.

Ca' Doge ***
The Ca' Doge has a "town house suites, 1st category" rating, which is comparable to a 3-star hotel classification. The hotel is on the Piazzale Roma, near the ATVO airport-bus stop and within walking distance of the cruise terminal. Internet access is free, and parking is available.

Hotel Canal and Walter photoHotel Canal and Walter
From the Piazzale Roma, the Canal & Walter is just a short walk along the fondamenta; the hotel is also handy to the railway station.

Hotel Casanova photoHotel Casanova
The Casanova is 50 meters from the Piazza San Marco in an upscale shopping street, the Calle Frezzeria. Rooms are furnished in 1930s style.

Hotel Casa Verardo photoHotel Casa Verardo
This hotel is in a lively, pleasant neighborhood between the Piazza San Marco and the Campo Santa Maria Formosa, and it's just a short walk from the S. Zaccaria vaporetto stop. The 16th Century building has a private courtyard, and some rooms overlook a canal.

Hotel Centauro
From the Rialto vaporetto stop, walk inland to Campo Marin. (The No. 1 boat's platform is closest to the hotel.)

Hotel da Bruno photoHotel Da Bruno
If you have a sweet tooth, you'll love this 32-room hotel's location across from La Boutique del Gelato, which some say is the best ice-cream shop in Venice. The Da Bruno is on the Salizzada San Lio, about 5 minutes from the Piazza San Marco and the Rialto Bridge.

Hotel Domina Giudecca photoHotel Domina Giudecca
If you're looking for peace and quiet during high season, the Domina Giudecca is worth considering: It's on the island of Giudecca, which is a short ride from the Zattere or the Piazza San Marco by public waterbus. (To save on transportation, you'll want to buy an Actv vaporetto tourist travel card, which normally will be cheaper than using individual boat tickets.)

Hotel Firenze
The Albergo Firenze is just 30 meters from the Piazza San Marco. The hotel has 25 rooms. Fourth-floor rooms have private balconies, and the top floor includes a terrace with scenic views.

Hotel Giardinetto (Lido)
This hotel in the Lido's main shopping area was renovated in 1999, and all rooms now have private baths.

Hotel La Meridiana photoHotel La Meridiana (Lido)
The Meridiana is a restored 1930s-style building with a private beach and a location just two minutes from the Casino waterbus stop.

Hotel Montecarlo
Triple rooms are available at this Best Western affiliate, which is only 50 meters (or about half the length of a football field) from the Piazza San Marco.

Hotel Olimpia photoHotel Olimpia
The Best Western Olimpia is very close to the Piazzale Roma, the arrival point for cars, taxis, and buses from the mainland. The railroad station is also nearby. The Olimpia is extremely handy if you're spending only a night or two in Venice and have an early departure.

Hotel Paganelli photoHotel Paganelli
The Paganelli family has owned this converted convent since 1874, and the location couldn't be better: It's in the high-rent district along the Riva degli Schiavoni, facing St. Mark's Basin. The Campo San Zaccaria is just behind.

Hotel Palazzo Bembo photoHotel Palazzo Bembo
This hotel is located high up in a 14th Century Venetian Gothic palace on the Grand Canal near the Rialto Bridge. The route from the hotel to the Piazza San Marco is a straight line, so you shouldn't get lost.

Hotel Palazzo Priuli
The family that built this 14th Century home claims three doges, 14 procurators, and five cardinals. Today, the palazzo is a first-class hotel with a variety of accommodations--including doubles, triples, connecting rooms, and junior suites (at least one of which has a fireplace).

Hotel Pausinia photoHotel Pausinia
The Pausinia occupies a Venetian Gothic palazzo overlooking a canal in Dorsoduro, in the San Barnaba neighborhood near Venice's last remaining fruit and vegetable barge. The Campo Santa Margherita, one of Venice's liveliest squares, is just across a nearby footbridge.

Hotel Rialto photoHotel Rialto
Of this hotel's 80 rooms, 28 face the Grand Canal. The Rialto Bridge is nearby, giving easy access to churches, museums, and other sights on both sides of the canal. Vaporetto routes 1 (local) and 2 (express) stop right in front of the hotel.

Hotel Boston - Royal San Marco photoHotel Royal San Marco
The former Hotel Boston has a great location: directly behind the Piazza San Marco, not far from Venice's most popular tourist attractions and the airport boat's pier

Hotel San Gallo
With a location just north of the Piazza San Marco, 12 air-conditioned rooms, and a roof terrace where you can enjoy breakfast on sunny days, the San Gallo is a good bet in the medium-priced category.

Don't be misled by the name--the Hotel Scandinavia's foundations date back to Byzantine era, and its decor is Venetian Traditional. You'll be delighted by the location: The Scandinavia is on the Campo Santa Maria Formosa, one of the liveliest neighborhood squares in the city and within easy reach of the Piazza San Marco and other sights.

Hotel San Zulian photoHotel San Zulian
It's a three-minute walk from the Piazza San Marco to the three-star San Zulian, where accommodations range from singles to quads.

Hotel Torino photoHotel Torino
Shoppers will like the Torino's location on the Via XXII Marzo; its neighbors include Prada, Versace, Magli, Vuitton, Biagiotti, and Bulgari.

Hotel Tre Archi photoHotel Tre Archi
This hotel, which opened in 2001, faces the Cannaregio Canal. The Venetian Ghetto is just a minute or two away, and the hotel is also easy to reach from the railway station and the Piazzale Roma.

Locanda del Ghetto  See illustrated article
If you're Jewish or simply have an interest in the Venetian Ghetto, try this newish hotel in Venice's historic Jewish quarter. It's next door to the Museo Ebraico and a synagogue; a kosher restaurant is close by. (You can see a large photo at the top of this page.)

Alloggi Locanda Marinenella breakfastLocanda Marinella
This small and cozy inn, which also goes by the name "Alloggi Marinella," has a friendly staff plus great guest ratings from Venere users--and from us. It's only a block from the Piazzale Roma, away from the traffic and vaporetti but close enough to be convenient to the ATVO airport bus and the Marittima cruise terminal. The hotel has a courtyard where you can sit and relax in warm weather. (Tip: Splurge for a superior double with private patio if you can.)

Locanda Ovidius photoLocanda Ovidius
The Ovidius is on the San Polo side of the Grand Canal. Some guestrooms (along with the breakfast rooms) have views of the Rialto Bridge, with double-glazed windows to minimize noise from passing vaporetti. Rates are reasonable, and guests have the use of an Internet terminal in the lounge.
