Venice Five-Star Hotels
Hotel
Bauer
The historic (and opulent)
Il Palazzo
section of the former Hotel Bauer Grunwald & Grand hotel overlooks the Grand
Canal. The 1940s addition behind it is less attractive but undeniably luxurious.
Hotel
Cipriani See illustrated review
Not sure what to do with your yacht when you're in Venice? Park it in the
Cipriani's 10-berth marina, then bask in luxury at one of Italy's most highly
regarded hotels. The Cipriani also owns the more intimate Palazzo Vendramin and
the Palazzetto Nani Barbaro, which are open year-round.
Hotel
Danieli
Another former Doge's residence with 222 rooms, and one of the most
prestigious addresses in town. It's worth the price if you enjoy luxury--and if
your room overlooks St. Mark's Basin. (See the hotel photo at the top of this
page.)
Grand Hotel
Dei Dogi
This former ambassador's residence is on a quiet fondamenta in the
delightful Madonna dell'Orto neighborhood on the northern edge of Cannaregio.
This member of Italy's Boscolo luxury hotel group is a long walk from San Marco, so it works best for leisurely
stays.
Hotel Des Bains (Lido)
The Hotel Des Bains is a 100-year-old grand hotel in a parklike setting facing
the Adriatic. The hotel, which is within easy walking distance of the Lido's
fashionable shopping district, was featured in the film adaptation of Thomas Mann's Death
in Venice.
Hotel Europa e
Regina
This perfectly situated Westin luxury hotel is below the Piazza San Marco on the
Grand Canal, with a nice view of the Salute church.
Hotel Excelsior Palace (Lido)
This mock Moorish palace, now known as the Westin Excelsior, was the largest hotel in the world
when it opened for business in 1912. It's is a fairly long walk from the
Lido's shopping district, but private launches make it easy for guests to reach
the Piazza San Marco.
Hotel
Gritti
Palace
The former Renaissance palace of the Doge Gritti overlooks the Grand Canal, and
it's the only place to stay (with the possible exception of the Danieli) if you're a visiting monarch or oligarch.
Luna
Hotel Baglione See
illustrated review
"Venice's oldest inn," which traces its history to the 12th Century, lies just
behind the narrow end of the trapezoid-shaped Piazza San Marco. Its 118 rooms
are lavishly decorated in a traditional Venetian style, and a sun terrace
overlooks St. Mark's Basin.
San Clemente
Palace See
illustrated review
This luxury resort hotel on a beautifully landscaped 17-acre private island has 205
rooms, a swimming pool and tennis courts, and its own 12th Century church. The
hotel is 15 minutes from San Marco by private launch. Rates aren't unreasonable
for a hotel of this caliber, and the San Clemente Palace is a great choice if you've dreamed at staying at
the
Cipriani but can't afford that hotel's stratospheric prices.
