  • On the left side of the satellite image above, a causeway or bridge from the Italian mainland leads into the Piazzale Roma (grey patch where the curving road ends) and the Santa Lucia railroad station (white spot to the right of that, next to the tracks). Taxis and airport buses arrive at the Piazzale Roma; from there, you'll need to walk or catch a water bus to reach other points in the historic center.

  • The Isola di Trochetto (upper left) is an artificial island with parking lots and a huge garage. The Venice Cruise Terminal is just below it in the photo.

  • The Grand Canal snakes through the historic center from the Piazzale Roma to St. Mark's Basin and the Piazza San Marco (tan patch below the green arrow). The Rialto Bridge is about halfway up the Grand Canal, to the left of the arrowhead's base.

  • The Lido di Venezia, the strip of land on the right side of the map, separates the Venetian Lagoon from the Adriatic Sea. You can see its beaches facing the sea; for a self-guided lagoon itinerary by public water bus, see our Venice Islands Tour.
