Spitsbergen Cruise PhotosFrom: MS Nordstjernen cruise review
BarentsburgSoon, the MS Nordstjernen was in the Grønford and approaching Barentsburg, a coal-mining settlement that was founded by Norwegians in 1912 and acquired from a Dutch mining company by the Soviet Union in 1932. In the photo above, you can see mined coal on the hillside above the port. The German armed forces destroyed Barentsburg during World War II (as they did Longyearbyen), and most of today's buildings are from the Cold War era.
