Barentsburg

As I descended the wood staircase to the port, I took this photo of the hillside. The two round-roofed buildings in the distance (near the top of the photo) house a vegetable garden and a pig farm.

Barentsburg doesn't have an airport, and there are no roads connecting the settlement to the airport at Longyearbyen. Local agriculture is the only way to assure fresh meat and produce in the long winter season, when polar ice makes it impossible for ships to deliver ships and other supplies from Murmansk.
