The Nordstjernen's crew had placed a footbath (more accurately, a shoe- or bootbath) at the bottom of the gangway to prevent local organisms from being brought on board and possibly contaminating other locations in Svalbard.

This wasn't meant as an affront to the Russians; the same environmental precaution was taken at other stops during the trip.
