Ny-ålesund

Since 1968, when the Norwegian Polar Institute set up a research station in Ny-ålesund, the settlement has found new life as an international scientific community. At any given time during the summer, 100 or more researchers  from some 15 countries are working on more than 120 different projects. Their room and board are provided by Kings Bay AS--the old state-owned mining company--which maintains and operates Ny-ålesund's buildings and public services.

Ny-ålesund is quieter in winter, when the port is iced in and most of the researchers have gone home. No more than 30 people reside here during the off-season.
