Blue Mosque interior

Istanbul, Turkey

With the retired schoolteacher in tow, we approached the Blue Mosque. On the veranda next to the mosque entrance, a young woman gave us bags for our shoes and wrapped a cotton shawl around Cheryl, whose arms were bare. (We later saw a man in shorts wearing a shawl as a skirt inside the mosque.) We went inside, where the vast carpeted space was mostly empty.

  • Tip: The Blue Mosque doesn't charge admission, but you're encouraged to leave a small donation on the way out. (Don't rush off--the man at the contributions desk is required to write out a receipt for each lira that you donate.)
