An enlarged excerpt from the free Izmir Map shows a peculiarity of the local street system: Smaller streets are labeled with block numbers, which are used on both maps and street signs.

This is a great convenience for foreigners, because block numbers are easier to recognize than long Turkish names are, and the use of block numbers makes it possible to squeeze more detail into a pocket-sized map.
