Agora - Izmir

Izmir, Turkey

We reached the top of the hill, turned right, and found ourselves at the Agora, which was the marketplace of ancient Smyrna. The ruins were next to modern buildings, but the site itself looked almost rural with its extensive grounds and large expanses of untended grass.

We bought tickets at the entrance booth and went into the ruins. (The admission fee at the time of our visit was three Turkish lira, or about € 1,36.)

  • Tip: The Agora was open daily from 8:30 a.m. to noon and 1 to 5 p.m. the last time we checked, so try to avoid showing up during the one-hour break at midday.
