The Clock Tower on Konak Square is considered the city's symbol (much like the Empire State Building in New York, Big Ben in London, or the Eiffel Tower in Paris). It was built in 1901 to celebrate the anniversary of Sultan Abdulhamit's coronation, and it was a gift from Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany.
