Day 4: Santorini, Greece (2)
From the the cliffside walls of Fira, we had a fine view of the village's whitewashed houses and churches.
We liked this juxtaposition of sunbeds and a domed church.
Norwegian Jade was straight ahead of us, with
tenders commuting between ship and shore.
While we watched, Celebrity Constellation steamed into the caldera, joining three other ships at anchor.
There were now four ships in Santorini for the day, bringing thousands of tourists to the island. Clockwise from left, the ships were: Celebrity Constellation, Norwegian Jade, Rhapsody of the Seas, and MSC Lirica.
Local sightseeing and excursion boats ran between Ormos Firon and other points along Santorini's coast.
Oddly enough, the town of Fira didn't seem overcrowded when we explored its narrow streets. It did feel touristy, though: Nearly every shop sold jewelry, clothes, souvenirs, or food and drink.
English was the lingua franca on Santorini.
White cotton and linen dresses appeared to be a local staple. Outside one shop, young women modeled the dresses and posed with tourists.
The main shopping street led us to another scenic overlook.
Next door, in front of the Hotel Atlantis, a couple were exercising their selfie stick.
A footless statue sat on a bench in the village center, inviting tourists to enjoy photo ops.
Outside the pedestrian zone, we discovered that the craft-beer craze had made its way to Santorini.
A pet bird enjoyed views from its outdoor cage.
