Gianmaria Potenza's "Sun" mosaic is made of Venetian glass tiles, or tessarae (shown in the detail photo). It was made in 1997, the year that ms Rotterdam was built in Venice's Fincantieri Shipyard.

Madeline Behrens-Brigham, a mosaic artist in California, has written to tell us that Gianmaria Potenza was born in Venice in 1936, studied art under George Wenter Marini, and later created his own studio.
