One of the more dramatic sights on the voyage downstream was the
Maeslantkering, or
Maeslant Barrier,
which opened in 1997 as the latest phase of the Deltaplan, or Delta Works,
flood- and water-control project.
The storm-surge barrier consists of two giant
gates that can be closed across the waterway that leads to Rotterdam to
prevent flooding of low-lying areas (some of which are below sea level).
