Directly across from the Hook of Holland are the modern cargo-handling
terminals, tank farms, and refineries of the Maasvlakte, an area of land
that was reclaimed from the sea in the 1970s.
In June, 2009, work began on Maasvlakte 2, a new port area to the west
of the existing port, which will jut into the North Sea at an elevation of 5
meters (16.4 feet when it opens to shipping in 2013.
