Spitsbergen Cruise Photos

From: MS Nordstjernen cruise review

Liefdefjord and Monaco Glacier

At the deepest point of the Liefdefjord, we approached the Monaco Glacier.

Ingrid, one of the Nordstjernen's guides, is intimately familiar with the glacier from having trekked to the Liefdefjord on skis from Longyearbyen (a distance of 200 km), accompanied only by a dog. In her official logbook of the cruise, she wrote:

"The Monaco Glacier in the bottom of the Liefdefjord is a spectacular glacier due to its surging behaviour, having relatively high velocity over the last years....It is about 5 km [3 miles] broad, and as high as 40 m [131 feet) at the front."
