The Silver Whisper's officers are mostly Italian, with a
sprinkling of other nationalities. (The chief navigator on our cruise was from
Poland.) Some began their careers in the Italian Navy, while most attended
navigation schools that are comparable to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.
The rest of the crew is described as "international." Many of
the sailors and below-decks personnel are from the Far East, while the
stewardesses and foodservice staff come from Western Europe, Eastern Europe,
Latin America, and countries along the Pacific Rim. On our cruise, the Austrian
hotel director was married to the Canadian cruise consultant, while the tour
director was American, the cruise director was English, and the ship's doctor
was from Paraguay.
