The Ludwig II Musical
Continued from page 1: Introduction

photo

ABOVE: The Musical Theatre Neuschwanstein lies at the end of Germany's Romantic Road, on the shores of Lake Forggen in Füssen, Bavaria.

Archived article

Update: The musical, Ludwig II: Longing for Paradise, is no longer running (or at least it wasn't running the last time I checked). The Festspielhaus in Füssen in Allgäu now stages operas and other productions and continues to offer gastronomy at various price levels in the theatre's restaurants.

Musical Theater Neuschwanstein

Ludwig II: Longing for Paradise is performed in the Musical Theater Neuschwanstein, which was built especially for the show at a cost of more than 20 million euros. It was designed by the Munich architect Josephine Barbarino of Urban Design in collaboration with her husband, Stephan Barbarino, the theatre's artistic director. The theatre's layout was inspired, in part, by architect Gottfried Semper's design for a Wagner Festival Theatre in Munich that Ludwig II commissioned but never built. (Richard Wagner also drew on Semper's plans when he designed his own Festspielhaus in Bayreuth.)

The large theatre complex is built of concrete, steel, and glass, and it sits in a neo-Baroque park that was dredged from the lake. The auditorium has 1,389 seats, the second-largest revolving stage in Germany, and--beneath the stage--a huge sloping water tank that is lifted to stage level in the final scene of the play.

For a behind-the-scenes view of the Musical Theater Neuschwanstein, attend the twice-monthly StageTechnology Show or take the one-hour Backstage Tour that takes place on performance days. These are very popular, so it's a good idea to book ahead.

The schedule and prices in the table below are subject to change, so double-check and make reservations by phoning +49 (0) 8362 / 9391-280 or (in Germany) using the Ticket Hotline at +49 (0)180 5 - 300 200.
