Berlin four-star hotels
Gates
am Kudamm
This is the hotel of choice for compulsive Internet users: Each of the 70 rooms
has a flat-screen PC with a high-speed Internet connection at no additional charge.
The renovated, modernized 19th Century building opened in 1957 as the Hotel
Windsor, which attracted stars such as Claudia Cardinale, Harry Belafonte, and
Marlon Brando.
ABACUS
Tierpark
This modern 278-room hotel in Friedrichshain has free parking, minibar
drinks for only €0,50, and a Windows PC in
the lobby that guests can use to check e-mail or browse the Web. It faces the
East Berlin zoo.
Albergo Berlin
This modern Italian-themed hotel is only 800 meters from the terminal at Schönefeld
International Airport, so it's convenient if you have an early departure and
don't mind being away from the city center. It has 50 rooms and a Mediterranean
restaurant.
Alexander
Plaza
Unlike many Berlin hotels, the Alexander Plaza was built in the 19th Century
(although the rooms are quite modern). It's located on a quiet street in the
center of what was once East Berlin, within walking distance of sights and
shopping.
Alsterhof
Episode 2232 of the German soap opera Good Times, Bad Times was shot in
Zum Lit-Fass, the Alsterhof's traditional Berlin pub. The modern hotel, which is
on a quiet street near the Kurfürstendamm, also has a beer garden that is open
from May through September.
Artim
"Cozy" is a good description of the Hotel Artim, which has only 50 rooms and
high guest ratings. The hotel is in the western part of the city, between
KaDeWe, Ku’damm and Potsdamer Platz.
Augusta
The Hotel Augusta is just off the Ku'damm, right in the middle shopping and
sightseeing. Parking is free, and the hotel will pick you up at the airport for
a small fee.
Best Western
President
This hotel is a few blocks from the Kaiser-Wilhelm Gadächtniskirche
in central Berlin. Use of the hotel gym is free, and you'll find jogging paths
in the Tiergarten (500 meters away).
Bleibtrau
Berlin
Behind the blue turn-of-the-20th-century façade is a distinctive 60-room hotel
with a restaurant and expresso bar. The Bleibtrau is near the Ku'damm, 1.5 km or
a mile from the Berlin Zoo railroad station.
Hecker's Hotel
All 72 rooms at Hecker's were renovated a few years ago. The more expensive
rooms (26 altogether) have marble bathrooms and air conditioning. The hotel is
located just off the Kurfürstendamm.
Holiday Inn Schönefeld Airport
This hotel isn't actually at the airport, but it's close by. Half of the rooms
are reserved for nonsmokers, and the hotel has both a restaurant and a health
club on the premises.
Inn Side
Residence - Hotel Berlin
Avant-garde design and modern art rule here; the rooms vary from high-style
singles and doubles to suites with butler pantries. The hotel is within
suitcase-rolling distance of the Ostbahnhof.
Ku'Damm 101
Hotel
Seventeen of the 171 rooms at this ultramodern hotel are equipped for
handicapped guests. The hotel also has a high-speed wireless network.
It's in the Wilmersdorf district, at the western end of Kurfürstendamm.
Mercure
Berlin Tempelhof Airport
Windows are double-glazed to keep airplane noise from disturbing your sleep at
this modern hotel near Tempelhof. The hotel's restaurant is open from 6 a.m.
until 11 p.m., making it convenient if you're departing early or arriving late.
Park
Hotel Berlin Schloß Kaulsdorf
Don't let the castle-like exterior fool you: This well-appointed hotel was
built in 2001. It's in Kaulsdorf, a residential district of Eastern Berlin.
