Pont du Gard, France
from Viking Burgundy Photos

photo

Roman aqueduct

France's most famous Roman ruin, the Pont du Gard, has three rows of arches and stands 49 meters or 160 feet high.

Twenty centuries ago, when the aqueduct was the centerpiece of a 50-km (30-mile) Roman plumbing network, water ran through a covered canal on top on its way to what is now the city of Nîmes.
