Venice Transportation

Venice, Italy - St. Mark's Basin

ABOVE: Rush hour in St. Mark's Basin..

Click the links below to read my illustrated articles on airport transportation, water buses, gondolas, car parking, and more.

Arrivals/departures

Arriving in Venice
Tips on reaching the city center from the airport, the railroad station, and mainland highways.

Venice Marco Polo Airport
Why fight the crowds in Milan or Rome when you can use Venice's far more manageable airport, VCE?

Venice Airport Boat
Henry James said Venice was best approached by sea. You can follow his advice for just 17,000 lire. (Also see my step-by-directions with photos on How to Reach the Alilaguna and Water Taxi Piers at Venice Airport.)

Venice Airport Buses
Here's how to use the city bus or special bus from Venice's Marco Polo International Airport to the Piazzale Roma--including the secret of where to buy a ticket.

Ryanair Airport Bus from Treviso to Venice
If you're flying Ryanair from London Stansted or Brussels Charlerol, here's how to get from Treviso Airport to Venice (or vice versa). Also see Transavia Airport Buses from Treviso.

Venice Railroad Station
Make sure you get off at the right station, or you'll be stuck in an industrial suburb.

Venice Water Taxis
The fare isn't cheap, but if you're traveling with a family or in a small group, the cost--and the fun--may be worth it.

Getting around Venice

Local Transportation
When you hail a taxi, don't step off the curb--and if you chase after a departing bus, make sure you're wearing a lifejacket.

Vaporetto Routes
Venice's waterbus system is more Byzantine than St. Mark's Cathedral. This article and route table will make the vaporetti less confusing. (Also see Venice Vaporetto Fares.)

Vaporetto Sights & Sounds
Photos and descriptions of Venice's water buses, plus a sound recording of a vaporetto's arrival and departure.

Gallivanting by Gondola
The price isn't outrageous if you split it among six people. And besides, a gondola ride is no more expensive than a bungee jump back home.

Parking/car ferries

Tronchetto Parking Garage
Unless you're willing to park on the mainland, this is the handiest place to leave your car or camper during a Venice stay.

Venice-Lido Car Ferries
If you're driving to Venice and staying on the Lido, you can reach the island by ferry--and take your car with you.
