La Biennale di Venezia
From mid-June until early November in odd-numbered years, Venice hosts a famous modern-art exposition that features painters, sculptors, and performance artists from around the world. See our archived article for a description of a past Biennale.

Gran Teatro La Fenice
Venice's opera house was gutted by a fire in 1996, but performances moved to other venues during the theatre's restoration. The theatre is now back in business, and you can book tickets or take a public tour.

Venice International Film Festival
The annual Mostra Internazionale d'Arte Cinematografica takes place in late August and early September.

Venice Marathon
Every year in late October, marathon runners compete on a course that takes them past Venice's sights and across a temporary pontoon bridge over the Grand Canal. A non-competitive 10K race follows much of the same route.

Vogalonga
On Ascension Day, Venetian oarfolk from every walk of life race around the Lagoon by rowboat. It's a great spectacle, with nearly a thousand boats on the course.
