Munich Hostels & Camping

From: Munich, Germany

Youth hostels

Meininger City Hostel and Hotel München
The Munich outpost of Berlin's Meininger hostel group is between the main railroad station and the Theresienewiese. Hostel rates include sheets and a breakfast buffet.

Euro Youth Hotel München
Choose from singles or doubles with baths, or shared room and dormitory accommodations. The hotel is 3 minutes from the Hauptbahnhof (main railway station) in an attractive older building.

4U
Rooms at this environmentally friendly hostel near the main railroad station have 4 to 12 beds. Two "guesthouse floors" offer doubles with private facilities.

YMCA Youth Hotel
The centrally located CVJM (as the "Y" is known in Germany) has single, double, and triple rooms with partitioned washing areas; toilets and showers are down the hall.

Haus International München
HI has 545 beds in 186 rooms (most with shower and toilet), plus amenities that include a cafeteria, a disco, and an indoor swimming pool.

IN VIA Marienherberge
This hostel is for girls and women up to age 30. It's run by a Catholic social organization and is just south of the Hauptbahnhof.

Deutches Jugendhebergeswerk Thalkirchen
The German Youth Hostel Federation has two hostels in outlying districts of Munich: the JH Thalkirchen and the JH Neuhausen, which is near the U1 subway line's Rotkreuz-Platz station. For details, enter "Munich" in the DJH search window. Important: JH hostels in Bavaria don't allow guests over age 26, except for group leaders.

The Tent (Kapuzinerhölzl)
Looking for a different experience in the summer months or during Oktoberfest? From the railway station, travel 13 minutes by U-Bahn to the Botanischer Garten stop and sleep in a huge tent with other backpackers. (Or you can bring your own tent and still enjoy the new toilets, showers, and self-service laundry facilities.)

Camping

München Thalkirchen Camping Ground
This campground is in a conservation and recreation area, about 20 minutes from central Munich by U-Bahn and bus. RV/caravan hookups are available, and the campground is open from March 15 until October 31. (Note: More campgrounds are listed at the bottom of Thalkirchen Camping Ground's Web page.)

Wies'n-Camp
During Oktoberfest, you can save money by renting a tent at the Olympic Horse Stadium--but you'll need to bring your own sleeping bag.
