Hotel Montalembert *****

The Montalembert, which opened in 1926, claims to be "the first five-star boutique hotel on the Left Bank." It's between the Seine and the Boulevard Saint-Germain. If you walk a few short blocks north from the hotel, you'll cross the Pont Royal to the Jardin des Tuileries on the Right Bank.

The hotel is fully air-conditoned, as you'd expect in the five-star category, and it has 50 rooms and suites. You can bring your small dog free of charge. (A basket and dog plate will be provided, and the concierge can arrange for dog-sitting and dog-walking services.)

Note: The last time we checked, a bottle of Champagne was included in Booking.com's rates for junior and full-size suites.

Hotel Pont Royal *****

The Pont Royal is close to the bridge of the same name, and it's billed as "the 5-star literary hotel of the Left Bank." Between World Wars I and II, the Pont Royal Bar was a hangout for the likes of Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway, and Arthur Miller along with a palette of Parisian painters.

Today, the hotel offers 65 rooms and 10 suites. If your bank account permits, we recommend springing for the 40-m² top-floor suite with panoramic view, which has two terraces and accommodates three guests.

Académie Hotel Saint-Germain ****

The Académie is on the Rue des Saint Pères, the dividing line between the 6th and 7th arrondissements. The Boulevard Saint-Germain is only a block south of the hotel, and the Seine is a short walk to the north.

The recently-renovated hotel has a decidedly French feel, with traditional furnishings and a tendency toward marble and gilded trim in the public rooms.

This traditional decor carries over to the 33 air-conditioned guest rooms and suites, whose color schemes were inspired by Napoleon III, Marie-Antoinette, and the kings of France. (Some rooms feature exposed beams or stonework, and all deluxe doubles and junior suites have spa bathtubs.)

The Académie has a bar, and a new wellness area with fitness room and steam bath should be open by the time you read this.

Hotel Bourgogne & Montana by MH****

This four-star hotel has 31 double and twin rooms, a spa, and a bar-tea room that is open from noon to 2 a.m. (In the afternoon, you can order pastries to accompany your pot of thé, café, or chocolat chaud.)

The hotel, a member of the MH group, is located on the Rue de Bourgogne, next to the square in front of the the Assemblée Nationale. The Place de la Concorde and the Jardin des Tuileries are only a few minutes away, across the Pont de la Concorde and the Seine.

Hotel de Lille ****

The Hotel de Lille (a.k.a. the Hotel de la Rue de Lille) is on the street of the same name, which runs parallel to the Seine one block inland from the river's embankment.

The hotel's 15 rooms and junior suites pay tribute to writers, poets, artists, and singers who resided in the neighborhood, ranging from Albert Camus to Serge Gainsbourg (who lived only a few meters from the hotel until his death in 1991).

A number of the rooms are decorated with the artists' own memorabilia, such as a portable Hermes typewriter that was once used by Françoise Sagan. What's more, all rooms have two features that didn't exist when their honored celebrities were alive: free on-demand movies and Nespresso machines.

Hotel de Varenne ****

There's no shortage of atmosphere at this hotel near the Rodin Museum, the Museum of Contemporary History, and the Army Museum: It's on a quiet street east of the Varennes Métro stop, and most of the 26 rooms face the hotel's private garden.

The decor is a mixture of Louis XVI and Empire style, and a few rooms have exposed beams for an extra dose of charm. (The nicest accommodation is the suite, which has a bedroom with a queen-size bed, a separate living area with a two-person sofa bed, and a bathroom with a whirlpool tub.)

All rooms have electric kettles and coffee machines--an atypical perk in Parisian hotels.

Hotel d'Orsay - Esprit de France ****

The Hotel d'Orsay - Esprit de France lies one block inland from the River Seine, and only a two-minute walk from the d'Orsay art museum. Also nearby is an RER commuter station where you can catch trains to the Eiffel Tower, Versailles, the city's river-cruise ports, and--via a connection--Charles de Gaulle or Orly Airport.

The highly-rated hotel has 42 rooms and suites, including a large four-person suite with a beamed cathedral ceiling and two balconies.

Hotel Duc de St-Simon ****

This charming boutique hotel occupies a townhouse from the 1700s, and it retains many of the building's original features-most notably the wide gates (once used by horses and carriages) that lead into an interior courtyard. Public rooms include a bar-library-lounge with piano beneath the stone arches of the 18th Century cellars.

Old-world atmosphere extends to the 34 guest rooms and suites, some of which overlook the garden. The location is delightful, too: The Hotel Duc de St-Simon is just a few blocks from the Seine, close to the Boulevard Saint-Germain and the Rue du Bac Métro station.

K+K Hotel Cayré Saint Germain des Prés ****

The Cayré is on the Boulevard Raspail, no more than a minute's walk from the Rue de Bac Métro station. It's a full-service hotel with a bar and bistro, a spa (including a free sauna and gym for guests), and amenities (such as guest laptops) for business travelers.

Rooms and junior suites are furnished in a contemporary style, with features such as coffee- and tea-making facilities and marble bathrooms with underfloor heating. (Free coffee and tea are also available in the lobby 24 hours a day.)

Hotel Le Bellechasse Saint-Germain ****

This highly-rated hotel is on a quiet street near the Musée d'Orsay, close to the Orsay RER and Solférino Métro stations. The banks of the Seine are only a block away.

Double and twin rooms are available in several sizes and price levels. (The hotel's rooms, both public and private, were decorated by French designer Christian Lacroix.)

 Other reasons to choose Le Bellechasse include a bar where afternoon hot drinks and pastries are served, a terrace, and availability of an iPad if you left your own mobile device at home.

Le Saint Hotel Paris ****

This hotel on the tiny, peaceful Rue Prés-aux-Clercs opened in 2016. It occupies a traditional Haussman mansion a few blocks in from the Seine, near the border of the 6th and 7th arrondissements.

Le Saint Hotel has 54 double and twin rooms, junior suites, and full-size suites (including a suite with terrace). All rooms have electric kettles for making tea and coffee, but you'll also find a bar-lounge and a restaurant downstairs. (Hot drinks and pastries are served during tea time from 2:30 to 6 p.m. daily.)

Other hotel amenities include a spa, a small fitness center with a vaulted stone ceiling, and a steam room.

Hotel Verneuil Saint Germain ****

The Verneuil is a 26-room hotel near the eastern edge of the 7th arrondissement and only two short blocks inland from the Seine. Head toward the river, and you can quickly cross the Pont du Carrousel bridge to the Louvre on the Right Bank.

Guest rooms vary in size and style, with some featuring beamed ceilings or exposed stone walls.

Hotel Bac Saint-Germain ***

This 21-room hotel is fully air-conditioned, with rooms that feature double glazing to keep out street noise. It also has a bar (open every day but Sunday from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.), a library area with fireplace, and a restaurant with a 7th-floor terrace where breakfast and lunch are served outdoors in good weather.

Rates at the Hotel Bac are quite reasonable, with a choice of doubles, twins, and superior (queen bed) rooms.

The hotel is conveniently located on the Rue du Bac, just below the Boulevard Saint-Germain and across the street from the Rue du Bac Métro station.

Hotel de l'Empereur ***

The "Emperor's Hotel" was redecorated a few years ago in a modern interpretation of Empire style (meaning plenty of traditional decor, but with 21st Century bathrooms).

Most rooms have views of the Invalides, which is close to the hotel. It's worth noting that l'Empereur has triples and quads in addition to the usual doubles and twins,  making it a good hotel for families.

The hotel is on the Rue Chevert, a quiet street within walking distance of the Tour-Maubourg and École Militaire Métro stations.

Hotel de l'Université ***

This hotel is named after its street, the Rue de l'Université, which runs parallel to the Seine about midway between the river and the Boulevard Saint-Germain. The nearest Métro station is Rue du Bac (Line 12).

The hotel is fully air-conditioned, and all 27 rooms are accessible by elevator. The most tempting rooms are the two junior suites on the top floor of the building, which open onto a private terrace.

The modern hotel lounge features floor-to-ceiling windows (decorated to resemble a rainforest), a glass pyramid overhead, and a bar.

Hotel du Palais Bourbon ***

The Palais Bourbon is on the Rue de Bourgogne, just north of the Musée Rodin and a couple of blocks east of the Invalides. The Varennes Métro stop is close by, and the Musée d'Orsay station of RER Line C isn't too far away.

The hotel's accommodations include doubles, twins, triples, quads, and two-bedroom family units. (The latter are an especially good value, since they cost only a little more than quadruple rooms but are considerably more spacious.)

Hotel du Quai Voltaire ***

As you might surmise from its name, the Hotel du Quai Voltaire faces the Seine, and many of the rooms have river views. (Singles, doubles, superior doubles, and twin rooms are available.)

A quick walk across the Pont Royal or the Pont du Carrousel will take you to the Jardin des Tuileries and the Louvre on the Right Bank.

Tip: If you're arriving from CDG or Orly Airport, take RER Line B to the Saint-Michel - Notre-Dame stop. From the station, it's an easy walk to the hotel along the sidewalk above the river.

Le Petit Chomel ***

With only 23 rooms, Hotel Le Petit Chomel has earned the "petit" its name, but this gem of a boutique hotel has a loyal following among Booking.com guests (who rate it as "wonderful").

The hotel lies  just north of a neighborhood park (the Square Boucicaut) and is less than a block from Le Bon Marché, one of the city's most elegant department stores. The Sèvres-Babylone Métro station is also close by.

Warning: Demand for rooms at Le Petit Chomel is high, as you might expect, so try to book well in advance if you want to stay here.

Hotel Saint Germain ***

This attractive three-star hotel is inland from the Seine 0n the Rue du Bac, in a highly desirable neighborhood with plenty of restaurants, cafés, shops, and other amenities. (The street is also home to a number of celebrated patisseries.)

The Saint Germain's 28 rooms are decorated in a classic French style. On the first floor of the hotel (second floor to Americans) is a junior suite, which has a beamed ceiling and overlooks the hotel garden. The junior suite accommodates two adults plus two children in a sofa bed.

Hotel Vaneau Saint Germain ***

The Vaneau Saint Germain is just off the Rue de Sèvres and around the corner from the Vaneau Métro station (Line 10). Several other Métro stops are nearby, making the hotel a convenient hub for shopping and sightseeing.

The hotel has 39 single, double, twin, and triple rooms. Many have balconies, some offer fireplaces or stained-glass windows, and all include electric kettles with supplies for making coffee or tea.
