The
Pensione Accademia Villa Maravege
is a longtime favorite with Venetophiles.
The 17th Century villa once served as a Russian embassy and was featured in
Summertime, the 1955 David Lean film that starred Katherine Hepburn.
The hotel has views of the Grand Canal and a large walled garden
where breakfast is served in nice weather. It also offers a wide choice of
rooms, ranging from singles to junior suites. Drinks and fruit are free in the
bar from 4 to 8 p.m. each day.
How to reach the Pensione Accademia from the Zattere
airport-boat stop:

-
As you leave the Alilaguna
Linea Blu waterbus pontoon at Zatttere, turn
left and walk to the first canal. Turn right just before the bridge.
-
Walk along the Fondamenta Nani (the sidewalk alongside the
canal) to either the first or second bridge.
-
Cross either bridge to the west (left) side of the canal.
-
Turn right as you leave the bridge and continue walking
along the canal until you reach the gates to the hotel's garden (see top
photo).
From the Marittima cruise terminals:
-
Take the Alilaguna Blue Line water bus from the floating
platform near the bottom of the U-shaped cruise basin. (When buying your
ticket, say "Zattere," and you'll pay half-fare.)
-
Get off at the Zattere stop.
-
Follow the directions above.
