Hotel Vecellio, Venice

The three-star Hotel Vecellio is located directly on the Fondamente Nove, facing the Venetian Lagoon. ("Fondamente Nove" is the dialect spelling on Venice's street signs; your map may use the Italian spelling "Fondamenta Nuove.") The Vecellio is a tiny family-run hotel, but its more expensive rooms offer views of boat traffic and--on clear days--the Italian Alps in the distance.

All eight guest rooms have free Wi-Fi Internet access. The Piazza San Marco is easy to reach on foot from the hotel, and public water buses run frequently between the Fondamente Nove, other vaporetto piers in the city center, and islands such as Murano and Burano.

Alilaguna's Blue Line airport boats stop at Fondamente Nove's pier "A" on their way into the city. (The boat trip from the airport to Fondamente Nove is much quicker than the circuitous route to San Marco and points beyond.)

Late at night, a few Alilaguna Orange Line boats also call at Fondamente Nove.

Here are our walking directions from pier "A":

  1. As you leave the pontile or pontoon, turn left and walk to the stone bridge ahead of you.

  2. Cross the bridge and walk a short distance toward the next waterbus pier.

  3. The Hotel Vecellio will be on your right, facing the water right before you reach the Calle Columbina.
