Hotels near Piazzale Roma (for Marittima piers)

Hotel listings for Marittima:

Hotel listings for San Basilio:

Several hotels are in the immediate vicinity of the Piazzale Roma, central Venice's closest point to the main cruise basin, Marittima. From Piazzale Roma, you can reach Marittima on the inexpensive People Mover, by land taxi, or--quite often--by free shuttle buses that go directly to your ship.

  • Important: Rooms at hotels on or near the Piazzale Roma can be hard to get during the cruise season, so it's best to reserve early if you can. (As long as you aren't making a non-refundable prepaid booking, you can always cancel later on if you change your mind.)

These two hotels are directly on the Piazzale Roma, which means you won't have to cross any bridges with heavy luggage.

(Downside: The Piazzale Roma is a busy square with taxis and buses, so you might want to consider one of the other hotels on this page if you want authentic Venetian atmosphere and don't mind a low bridge or two.)

  • View from Hotel Santa ChiaraHotel Santa Chiara (3 stars) is an ISO 9001-certified hotel on the edge of the Piazzale Roma, next to the Grand Canal and the Calatrava Bridge to the railroad station. Along with the Ca' Doge (see below), it's the most convenient hotel to Marittima if you want to avoid bridges. Superior rooms have canal views, while some of the cheaper rooms are at the Residenza Parisi (near the Piazzale Roma vaporetto stop). Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel. • Ca' DogeCa' Doge is a "town house suites, 1st category" property, which corresponds to a 3-star hotel. The Ca' Doge is next to the elevated People Mover, which will take you to the Marittima cruise port in less than two minutes. It offers free Internet access and has parking on the premises. The following hotels are just beyond the Piazzale Roma over small footbridges:

  • Hotel ArlecchinoHotel Arlecchino (3 stars) is on the Fondamenta delle Burchielle, about 100 meters from the airport buses and taxis in the Piazzale Roma. Singles, doubles, triples, and quads are available, and guests have access to the garden of the Best Bestern Olimpia next door. (We booked through Venere at a bargain rate and got a room with a canal view.) Check lowest rates, reviews, and availability:

  • Best Western Hotel Olimpia gardenBest Western Hotel Olimpia (3 stars) is an excellent hotel just beyond the Arlecchino, alongside a canal next to the Piazzale Roma. The Olimpia offers a variety of room types, including junior suites, and it has a private garden with beach umbrellas and deck chairs. Free Wi-Fi is available in all public areas. • Hotel Alloggi Locanda MarinellaAlloggi  Marinella (3-star equivalent), a personal favorite, has unusually high guest ratings from Venere and Booking.com users. The inn's location is just about perfect: It's just a block from the Piazzale Roma, away from the parking garages and boat platforms but close enough for early airport-bus departures or catching a taxi to the cruise terminal.

Cheryl Imboden at Alloggi MarinellaThe Alloggi Marinella also has a garden where you can sit and relax in warm weather. If your budget allows, spend a little extra for a superior room with a walled private patio.  (We stayed in a room with patio for a couple of days before an MSC Eastern Mediterranean cruise. See our illustrated Alloggi Marinella review.) Check lowest rates, reviews, and availability:

  • Hotel GardenaHotel Gardena (3 stars) is about three minutes from the Piazzale Roma, with two tiny bridges to cross, but you might think it's in a different world: The hotel is on a delightful neighborhood canal, and the cafés along the water are often filled with students and professors from the architectural university nearby. • Hotel Papadopli VeneziaHotel Papadopoli Venezia (ex-Sofitel) (4 stars) is just beyond the public gardens that are reached via a low footbridge from the Piazzale Roma. The former Sofitel, which is now part of Accor's MGallery Collection, is a good choice if you're looking for an upscale hotel with a bar, restaurant, concierge, and other services on the premises. • photoHotel Abbazia (3 stars) is in a side street near the railroad station, making it a little more distant from the Piazzale Roma than some of the other hotels described here. (On the plus side, the modern Calatrava Bridge to the railroad station is easy to cross with luggage.) The hotel occupies a former monastery, and some rooms face the large garden where breakfast is served in nice weather. Check lowest rates, reviews, and availability:

Other hotels within walking distance of the Piazzale Roma:

Palazzo Odoni wellhead with candlesIf you prefer to be a little more distant from the buses, boats, and bustle of the Piazzale Roma, you could try Al Sole (3 stars), the Carlton on the Grand Canal (4 stars), or a Venetian mansion that doubles as a boutique hotel, the Palazzo Odoni (3 stars, photo at right). Please note that the term "distant" is relative: All of these hotels are within a five- to 10-minute walk of the Piazzale Roma, depending on your speed.

photoOr you could book a room at the Falier (2 stars), which is a 10-minute walk from the Piazzale Roma but is handy to one of the liveliest squares in Venice, the Campo Santa Margherita. It's an appealing choice if you're traveling with nothing larger than a midsized wheeled suitcase.

For a charming and delightful location:

Hotel Ai Due FanaliIf you're willing to walk 7 to 10 minutes and cross two small footbridges, you won't go wrong with the cozy Ai Due Fanali (see our illustrated review), the Ca' Nigra Lagoon Resort with its huge garden, or the Canal Grande. All three hotels are on the Campo San Simeon Grande, a lovely and peaceful little square where you can sit on a park bench and watch boat traffic on the Grand Canal.
